| "Finally I did it!" exclaimed a delighted Cipollini as he was mobbed on viale Giotto after his win. "It was really great to return home (to Tuscany) and win here." And SuperMario doubled his pleasure as he equalled Alfredo Binda's Giro stage win record at 41, the first time a rider has won a Giro d'Italia stage wearing the World Champion's jersey in 16 years. Awaiting Cipo in Arezzo was his wife Sabrina, his mother Alfreda and two daughters. Mario's mom, his number one fan, told RAI-TV that "I think we brought Mario some luck today." And after the stage, Laureta Binda, the daughter of Alfredo Binda called Cipo with her congratulations. Cipollini added, "I'm extremely happy today. Even though my condition isn't what I wanted coming into the Giro. I probably did too much work before the start but now I'm getting my explosiveness and pedaling back." He dedicated his 41st Giro stage win to RAI-TV commentator Adriano De Zan, who died two years ago. "De Zan is gone but he's a person we don't talk about enough. De Zan was always great to us pro cyclists and we miss him." A gracious Alessandro Petacchi sent his congratulations to Cipollini after the stage, saying "he rode a really great sprint today. I tried to jump him, but I just didn't have the legs today. If you start a sprint two lengths behind Mario, it's tough to pass him. I'll try again tomorrow." Maglia Rosa Stefano Garzelli also had kind words for Mario; "I hoped Cipo would win today, he really deserves it...(Vini Caldirola) had a tough day today defending the jersey. It was a long and fast stage so we're tired, but we'll be ready again tomorrow." Now that Cipollini has broken the ice with his first win, he and his team are more motivated than ever. 38 year old Mario Scirea, nicknamed l'avvocato (the lawyer), Cipo's most loyal teammate and roommate explained that "today was a win for the entire (Domina) team. We believed in Mario since the first day (of the Giro) but (the win) didn't come. Now we're in Toscana and we won and we're all happy now. A lot of things have been said about what was going on in our team, but in reality we all wanted the same thing: that Mario wins." |
Glückwunsch und wenn ich den so seh, gutaussehend der Mann und ein guter Sprinter.
